Lampwork Beads

At markets, I am often asked what a lampwork bead is. Many people often assume that they are something to do with lampshades. Lampworking (often referred to as flameworking) is a method where rods of glass are melted over an extremely hot flame onto a stainless steel rod in order to create a bead. Once the bead has been cooled, the rod is removed and the bead is annealed in my kiln for lasting strength and durability.

The lampworked beads featured here are made mainly using Effetre (Moretti) glass from Italy, as well as CIM (Creation Is Messy) glass from China. Many of the beads incorporate silver, copper, gold and/or enamels depending on the design. No two pieces of lampworked beads are the same.
